I have been thinking a lot about what I want to do with the rest of my life, what I would do if I could get a real job. It’s just such a long time since I have had a real job. I have been working at the University of Florida (UGF), writing papers, doing research, and doing a lot of internships.
I work at the University of Florida as a Business major, and I have to say that my education is one of the best in the state. Not only does it enable me to take classes in English and psychology, the university has a department of business and marketing. So much of life is about being able to do what you want to do. That is the case with my education. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “If you don’t do it, someone else will do it.” That’s true to a degree, but the truth is that if you don’t do something, someone else will do it.
The key word there is “someone else.” Most jobs in the world are not created in a day. They take a few years. But they also take a certain amount of time to develop. Business schools want students to take a specific path, and they want you to do that. So it is extremely difficult to get into business school if you don’t know the name of a business school.
I know most of the people in fresno state business major are involved in something in any way, shape or form. They are involved in the local economy. They are involved in state government. They are involved in the arts. They are involved in the local business community. But they are not involved in any way. Most of the people in the state business major are involved in, well, normal stuff.
But not here in California.
To further the point, many of the people in this business major are not involved in any way in the local economy. They are not involved in state government. They are not involved in the arts. They are not involved in the local business community. And just about the only way you can tell they are involved is if they are in the local business community.
What this says is that people in this business major think a lot about business, but they don’t really know much about how businesses work, or what it takes to succeed in business. And that’s OK. It’s not a bad thing to be out of the loop, but it’s also not a bad thing to be in the loop. It’s just not possible to be everywhere at once.
I can see the point. That kind of insight from a business major is exactly what makes the job of a good CEO so very difficult. Its not that they dont know how to run a business. Its that they dont know business. Its hard to be around business when youre not familiar with how it works. Its hard to be an effective leader when you dont know how to lead. Its hard to be a good employee when you dont know how to motivate and inspire.
